Introducing Your Puppy to Grooming

Fluffy puppy ready for its first groom

The first groom shapes how your puppy feels about salons for life. Done right, it becomes a highlight of their month — treats, warm water, new smells and undivided attention. Done rushed, it can plant nerves that take months to undo. Here is exactly how we recommend starting.

Start earlier than you think

Once vaccinations are complete — usually around 12 to 16 weeks — your puppy is ready for a gentle introductory visit. This first session is deliberately short: a warm wash, a light brush, a nail touch and lots of exploration. No haircut pressure, no marathon session.

Practice the basics at home

A few minutes a day makes a enormous difference. Touch paws, lift ears, run fingers along the belly — and reward every cooperative second. Run a humming electric toothbrush near (not on) their body so dryer sounds feel familiar.

  • Handle paws, ears and tail daily with treats.
  • Brush for two minutes, always ending on a good note.
  • Practice standing on a raised, non-slip surface.
  • Reward calm behavior around running water and blow dryers.

What happens at Tubtail

Your puppy meets one dedicated groomer, sniffs the salon, and sets the pace. We stop the moment stress appears and celebrate every brave moment. Most puppies leave tired, proud and slightly obsessed with our treat jar.

Keep the rhythm going

Book the second visit within 3–4 weeks while the memory is fresh and positive. Puppies under six months get 15% off their first groom with us — because great beginnings should be easy.
